Texas Radio Host Kidd Kraddick, Dead at 53

uncredited AP photoDavid "Kidd" Kraddick, the high-energy radio and TV host of the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning show heard on dozens of U.S. radio stations, died at a charity golf event supporting his charity Kidd's Kids near New Orleans, a publicist said. Kraddick was 53.

"He died doing what he loved, and his final day was spent selflessly focused on those special children that meant the world to him." said Biro, of the public relations firm Champion Management. He said he had no further details on the death.

The Kidd Kraddick in the Morning show is heard on more than 75 Top 40 and Hot AC radio stations and is a leader among most-listened-to contemporary morning programs, Biro said. The radio program also is transmitted globally on American Forces Radio Network while the show's cast is also seen weeknights on the nationally syndicated TV show Dish Nation.

"All of us with YEA Networks and the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning crew are heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend and leader," the network statement said. "Kidd devoted his life to making people smile every morning, and for 21 years his foundation has been dedicated to bringing joy to thousands of chronically and terminally ill children."

The Dallas Morning News reported Kraddick had been a staple in the Dallas market since 1984, starting in a late-night debut. The newspaper said he moved into morning show work by the early 1990s in that market and his show began to gain wider acclaim and entered into syndication by 2001 as he gained a following in cities nationwide.

The network statement said the cause of death would be released "at the appropriate time."

Word of Kraddick's passing spread quickly via social media.

"RIP Kidd Kraddick. You were an amazing man and a friend. You are already missed," Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted.

"Oh Man, I just heard Kidd Kraddick died! He's my childhood dj. What a sad day. His poor family. He was always nice 2 me from the beginning," singer Kelly Clarkson tweeted.

Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, only recently announced as the headline act of a planned first-ever Kidd's Kids charity concert in Dallas next month, wrote: "The sad sad news about Kidd Kraddick is shocking. He will be missed greatly."

"He came out and he borrowed my golf clubs and went out to the driving range," Richie Tomblin, the head golf pro at the course. "It's kind of a freaky situation. He came out. He practiced a little bit. He hit the ball at the first tee and wasn't feeling good and after that I didn't see him."

Tomblin said the hundreds of amateur golfers taking part went ahead with the event Saturday. He added he only found out afterward that Kraddick had died and he was still shaken about it.

You will be missed by all, Kidd. Thank you for making this wold a better place while you were here. God Bless your soul.

Houstonian Releases A Lost Interview with Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry

RARE 1973 PHONE CHAT GIVES INCITE INTO THE BIRTH OF STAR TREK

Former Houston radio and television personality Scott Arthur was spring cleaning recently when he came across a telephone interview he did with the “Father” of Star Trek in 1973.

“It’s 40 years ago almost to the day.”Scott said. “I was a young DJ at WARM radio in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Mr. Roddenberry was scheduled to speak at a local college and I got his phone number and set up an interview to promote the event in advance.” said the Texas Radio Hall of Famer.

To put this in context, the original Star Trek series (Star Trek TOS) ran 79 episodes on NBC from 1966-1969 and then was canceled. The interview took place about the time determined “Trekkies” began a nationwide campaign petitioning the network to bring the series back to TV. It seems the show began to build a cult following after it aired in prime time and was banished to “re-run land”. The network chiefs felt the series and the concept had no future … that was 12 feature films and 5 separate TV series ago. This multi-million dollar franchise also includes Star Trek comics, merchandise, novels and even games.

“Before I began rolling tape ….he told me that the TV set was going to be the center of our lives. He said, your TV will have a typewriter in front of it – and open up the world to you. Just a glimpse of his genius and vision.” said Scott. “With all the hype of the new Trek Movie – this is fun to listen to. He shares how they invented the Spock character and was told to hide him, what the woman’s lib movement forced him to do  … and what inspired the Transporter.”

In Memory

As you may know, pioneer traffic reporter Marty Ambrose - the man who initiated radio traffic reports in Houston - passed away in June from ALS. He has since been named as an inductee to the Texas Radio Hall of Famm that will happen this November.

As a tribute to Marty and his accomplishments this Friday, on what would have been his 70Th birthday, some of the radio stations that carried his reports will dedicate their AM Drive traffic reports to him. Stations include SUNNY 99.1, Talk650 and KUHF - where he worked almost until his death.
Marty was DISH'S teacher when we were a traffic reporter on all 8 Clear Channel stations here in Houston and our Mentor, Texas Radio Hall of Famer Scott Arthur's best buddy. He and Scott were partners on KQUE for 18 years.
He's missed everyday.
God Bless you, Marty.

Radio Tongues are Wagging

More like begging! It's just been announced that the Mix morning guy Rick Stacylanded a cush PD job in Orlando. Smaller market, bigger position. So that leaves the much coveted morning show up for grabs!

Let's see....Walton & Johnson has already been moved 4 times, Roula & Ryanhave moved 2 or three times. Of course we can always push for the return of Sam Malone. DISH Fav and friend Outlaw Davedoesn't fit the format. Could Houston possibly be bringing someone new into the market??

Good thing Clear Channel doesn't own Mix 96.5 anymore or Michael Berry might think he has to talent to do FM!
