Houstonian Releases A Lost Interview with Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry

RARE 1973 PHONE CHAT GIVES INCITE INTO THE BIRTH OF STAR TREK

Former Houston radio and television personality Scott Arthur was spring cleaning recently when he came across a telephone interview he did with the “Father” of Star Trek in 1973.

“It’s 40 years ago almost to the day.”Scott said. “I was a young DJ at WARM radio in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Mr. Roddenberry was scheduled to speak at a local college and I got his phone number and set up an interview to promote the event in advance.” said the Texas Radio Hall of Famer.

To put this in context, the original Star Trek series (Star Trek TOS) ran 79 episodes on NBC from 1966-1969 and then was canceled. The interview took place about the time determined “Trekkies” began a nationwide campaign petitioning the network to bring the series back to TV. It seems the show began to build a cult following after it aired in prime time and was banished to “re-run land”. The network chiefs felt the series and the concept had no future … that was 12 feature films and 5 separate TV series ago. This multi-million dollar franchise also includes Star Trek comics, merchandise, novels and even games.

“Before I began rolling tape ….he told me that the TV set was going to be the center of our lives. He said, your TV will have a typewriter in front of it – and open up the world to you. Just a glimpse of his genius and vision.” said Scott. “With all the hype of the new Trek Movie – this is fun to listen to. He shares how they invented the Spock character and was told to hide him, what the woman’s lib movement forced him to do  … and what inspired the Transporter.”

Super Bowl not so Super for Houston Viewers

The numbers are already out and have been crunched and Houston was the 2nd lowest rated city for those watching the Super Bowl! Out of the 56 cities surveyed, only Salt Lake City came in under H-Town. Who are we kidding, no one really cared about either team and there were tons of things to do here yesterday that had NOTHING to do with football! It's the 4th year in a row Houston has cared less about the game.

The commercials were a hit as always though! Here are the 10 most-viewed ads during the Super Bowl, according to TiVo’s usage data from 30,000 subscribers:

1. GoDaddy.com: "Enhanced?”
2. Bud Light: "Summer to Winter."
3. Careerbuilder.com: "It May Be Time."
4. Doritos: "Crystal Ball."
5. Transformers: "Revenge of the Fallen."
6. Monster.com: "Moose Head."
7. Bud Light: "Man Thrown out the Window."
8. Pepsi: "MacGruber/Pepsuber."
9. Denny’s: "Thugs."
10. Coke Zero: "Mr Polamalu.”

And here are the preliminary leaders in fan voting for the best Super Bowl ads on AOL’s Funhouse.com:

1. Coca-Cola: "Picnic.”
2. Budweiser: “Fetch.”
3. Bridgestone: “Moon Dancers.”
4. Budweiser: “Clydesdale.”
5. Bridgestone: "Mr. Potato Head."
6. Doritos: “Bus.”
7. E*Trade.com: “Babies.”
8. Budweiser: “Horse Love.”
9. Monster.com: "Moose."
10. CareerBuilder.com: "Hate Work."

So...do you think it's because the Texans suck so badly that it's just painful as a football fan to watch the Super Bowl?? Sure...let's go with that!

A Texan on Idol Tonight!!

DISH is so excited that another Texan is hitting the American Idol stage. Here's to hoping she's good enough to put through! No Texans made it through the year DISH produced the show, but Texas' own Kelly Clarkson is breaking records left and right and she got her start on Idol so here's to hoping!!!

Kendall Beard is from Austin and is set to perform tonight on American Idol.

She also is trained in theatrical dance, has been writing songs since age 14, has the sweetest personality you will ever meet and to top off all of that she is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin (i.e.: everyone has a flaw).

Watch tonight! She auditioned in Puerto while on vacation with her Dad. YIPPEEE TEXAS!
