MFAH Opening: James Turrell: The Light Inside

No doubt you've heard of the Turrell Skyspace on the Rice University Campus. It has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of Houstonians at dawn and sunset showing us a new way to watch the sun's transformation.

James Turrell Skyspace, Rice University Campus

There is a new instilation coming from this amazing light master to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The exhibition is called James Turrell: The Light Inside.

James Turrell: The Light Inside explores the remarkable career of James Turrell (b. 1943), a pioneer in the Light and Space movement that transformed the landscape of American Art.  Open to the public June 9 through September 22, 2013, this monumental presentation fills the Museum’s 22,000-square-foot Brown Pavilion and features seven of Turrell's immersive light environments, ranging from his first projections of the late 1960s to his most recent Tall Glass series of 2010–13. Also on view are three major print portfolios and documentation of the evolution of Roden Crater, Turrell's life work in the Arizona desert. Drawn from the Museum's unparalleled collection, the exhibition takes its title from The Light Inside, commissioned by the Museum in 1999 as a permanent installation for The Wilson Tunnel. James Turrell: The Light Inside is part of a nationwide celebration of Turrell’s work and was conceived in conjunction with simultaneous exhibitions mounted over the summer of 2013 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Isabel B. Wilson, Chairman Emeritus of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Local Musician Taking a Bite Out of the Big Apple

Good things have been going on for Houstonian Kristine Mills. Every time you see her she's running one hundred miles a minute, working harder than most and creating great success because of it all.
Recently she was in New York performing at the Metropolitan Room with Tommy "TJ" James, arranger, conductor and pianist of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, but before she went in a meeting with DISH she was vowing she was going to enter and win the coveted New York City Tudor Park Songwriting Contest...and now she's a semi-finalist. No surprise when you listen to her perform. Her passion in her words, sultry voice and enthusiasm draw you in. It's all a winning combination.
Her albums have been raved about in Jazz Magazine, Review in The Borderland (Musicwatch Column) in the UK, All About Jazz.com, and the Houston Press among a list of very impressive others. The 4th one is on its way, but not in the usual way. "As Yet Untitled"  has been selected as a project funded by a Houston ArtsAlliance (HAA) Individual Arts Grant for an established artist. She will resume recording late summer and hope to release in February 2013.

But that's not all for this powerhouse, in a recent collaboration with local documentary film maker, Michel Muylle Kristine  wrote, produced and performed the soundtrack for his film"Collector's Waltz" which was just in the Houston WorldFest Competition. Turns out, the doc "Collectors Waltz"  won a Houston WorldFest Festival REMI award! They are planning to debut the film this fall and will release the soundtrack in conjunction with the premiere as well.

Kristine isn't just a singer/songwriter who apparently collaborates with the greatest of the great, she is also a wife, a mother and a humanitarian. She donates her time to numerous organization and even proceeds to one of her songs. On May 22, 2012 Mills will release her live, March 28, 2012 "The Front Row" radio performance of the debut of "Silhouette"exclusively on iTunes. The KUFH/KUHA "The Front Row" has graciously given Mills the right to donate this recording of "Silhouette" to the Rose Ribbon Foundation. All the sales of the download of this live version of the song will go to the Rose Ribbon Foundation. "Silhouette"was written to celebrate Holly Harwood Skolkin's, Cindi Rose's younger sister, courageous 15-year fight with stage 4 breast cancer. Cindi and her husband, Dr. Franklin Rose started the Rose Ribbon Foundation to provide reconstruction to uninsured breast cancer patents.

So head on up to NYC in June where she will perform her original song, "Patch of Green" during the Wed. June 20th New York City Tudor Park Concert as a SEMI-Finalist of the NYC Tudor Park Songwriting Contest. Then catch her again at the legendary Metropolitan Room with pianist Tommy "TJ" James, Dave Dunaway, bass and Jacob Melchior on drums on Wed. June 27 at 9:30 pm!

Or go to MKT Jazz Brunch this Sunday. You'll be in heaven either way.

Houstonian Cesar Galindo Rocks New York Fashion Week

CESAR GALINDO will be showing his FALL 2010 collection, Tuesday, February 16th at 9PM in affiliation with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at THE BOX at 189 Chrystie Street, between Stanton & Rivington.  Sponsors: REDKEN 5th Avenue NYC.

For FALL 2010 Galindo rocks it! His muse and inspiration- the one and only die-hard, sexy, stylish, icon rocker- MS. JOAN JETT.  Galindo is her officially commissioned designer regarding her appearances at the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL.

Galindo states, “this is an honor for me, I remember dancing to Jett’s music in my high school cafeteria and rocking out!  Today that rock n’ roll spirit is alive and well as I hone in on her aura and iconic rebel message, which is reflected, in my designs. For me, Joan Jett has always been true to herself; she is the ultimate, radical and uncompromising female rocker.  Her style, persona, music and lyrics emanate from the core- very grassroots.  It is the same message I have always applied as a fashion designer- to stay true to yourself, allow to be stimulated and apply the fire inside you.”

Galindo’s runway looks will be a juxtaposition of head-turning fashion with style, color and details. A ROCK and ROLL fantasy, rebel nights, classic Goth- THEATER!  He will deliver double-faced sequin gowns, party tanks, CATSUITS his drive and statement of this fashion season. Some in solids, with textures, sequined and animal prints. Corseted jackets with knit details, tailored sequined pants, circle coats and multiple cover-ups in varying fabrics.  Textures with matte and shine, colors- red, silver, gold, purple, turquoise, and his signature vibrant and classic Fuchsia.

Galindo is a big supporter of Houston, Texas- his hometown, its creative communities and designers. For this season he pairs up with Angelica Ximenes Chapman designs, her jewelry will reflect color, clarity, precision, bold and simple designs from rings, to earrings, to chokers, pendants and necklaces.

For FALL 2010 it’s only ROCK n’ ROLL!  For Cesar will captivate us and turn out a show at a venue whose unsuspecting door in a sketchy Lower East Side alleyway will take you back to the 1930’s with the realness of 2010.  If you have never been to a Galindo show then do and get there early if you have an INVITE and as always expect a packed house, good people and a night charged with ROCK-HARD surprises!
